The World’s Best Coffee Shops Were Just the Beginning / The World’s Best Coffee Shops fue solo el principio

What started as a global ranking is becoming a movement connecting coffee excellence from origin to consumer.

When we launched the first edition of The World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops at CoffeeFest Madrid in 2025, the objective was clear: to identify and give international visibility to coffee shops that were not only serving outstanding coffee, but were also playing an increasingly important role in educating consumers and spreading a culture of coffee excellence.

What happened afterwards went far beyond a ranking.

The first South America’s 100 Best Coffee Shops followed at Cafés de Colombia Expo in Bogotá in 2025. In 2026, the second edition of The World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops returned to CoffeeFest Madrid, followed by the first North & Central America and the Caribbean 100 Best Coffee Shops at World of Coffee San Diego, Europe’s 100 Best Coffee Shops at World of Coffee Brussels, the second South American edition at The Global Coffee Fair in Quito and the first Asia-Pacific 100 Best Coffee Shops at Café Show Seoul. In December, the first Middle East & Africa 100 Best Coffee Shops will add another major region to this rapidly expanding global map.

Behind these events, however, something much more significant has been taking shape: a global community around coffee excellence.

Today, more than 1,200 coffee professionals form part of our international jury, independently evaluating coffee shops around the world. They use proprietary technology developed specifically for the programme, allowing evaluations to be submitted and analysed in real time, with constantly updated information by country, city and region. The system also monitors voting consistency and identifies significant deviations, helping to maintain coherence across different markets and coffee cultures.

The evaluation goes far beyond the cup. Coffee quality remains fundamental, but professionals also assess food, signature drinks, atmosphere, service, barista knowledge and preparation, prescription and the overall consumer experience.

Alongside professional evaluation, we have always believed that consumers must have a meaningful voice. Coffee Lovers experience a coffee shop differently and understand something fundamental: the real customer experience. For this reason, the final rankings are determined through a weighted combination of 70% professional jury evaluation and 30% Coffee Lover voting.

Today, around 500,000 Coffee Lovers are already connected to this ecosystem, discovering and recommending coffee shops and contributing to the spread of specialty coffee culture around the world.

Connecting the world’s leading coffee shops

Perhaps one of the most important consequences of this movement has been connecting leading coffee shops around the world for the first time within the same global framework.

Until relatively recently, an outstanding coffee shop could develop an exceptional concept in Madrid, Bogotá, Seoul or Dubai while knowing relatively little about what leading operators thousands of kilometres away were doing. Innovation existed everywhere, but much of that innovation remained fragmented.

Today, coffee shops can observe what is happening in other markets, understand where coffee culture is moving and measure their own evolution against leading operators worldwide. The platform has provided them not only with visibility, but also with orientation and direction.

And the impact goes beyond coffee shops themselves. 73% of the coffee shops in our top tier are also roasters, demonstrating how closely the evolution of the world’s leading coffee shops is already connected to roasting, sourcing and the search for greater control and understanding of the coffee they serve.

The community created around the rankings is therefore already connecting two fundamental links in the value chain: coffee shops and roasters.

At the same time, the network is being built locally through The Best Coffee Shops national programmes. Specialised organisations in each market become our Country Partners and reproduce the model locally, identifying outstanding coffee shops, creating their own national professional juries, involving Coffee Lovers and organising awards at major coffee events or through independent ceremonies.

Importantly, these national juries operate independently from the international jury, preserving the distinction between local evaluation and the international process.

The programme closed 2025 with 12 countries. By the end of 2026, we expect to reach 50 countries across all continents, with the objective of connecting approximately 100 countries in 2027.

In 2026, we also signed an agreement with the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) to collaborate in expanding the visibility of this activity, with some continental editions taking place within its World of Coffee events.

A community of 50,000 top-level coffee shops

This movement has already created a community of approximately 50,000 top-level coffee shops around the world. Yet recognition remains highly selective: only around 4% of them are recognised within the national, continental and world rankings.

That difference is important because the purpose is not simply to create lists of winners. Recognition creates aspiration, and aspiration encourages improvement.

We are seeing coffee shops strengthen their coffee programmes, invest in their teams, improve service, develop signature beverages and food propositions, rethink customer experience and pay much closer attention to what leading businesses in other parts of the world are doing.

In markets where specialty coffee culture is still developing, this can accelerate growth and encourage new openings. In more mature markets, it creates another challenge: the best cannot afford to stand still. Achieving recognition is difficult; maintaining it requires continuous innovation.

In that sense, the system does not simply identify excellence. It helps create the conditions for more excellence to emerge.

From the coffee shop to the entire coffee chain

The rapid growth of this community has also made something increasingly clear. If coffee shops are one of the principal points of contact between specialty coffee and consumers, they also have a responsibility to communicate the value of everything behind the cup.

That means producers, roasters, baristas, equipment, water, technology, food, signature drinks, design, sustainability and every product, company or professional capable of adding genuine value to the experience.

And perhaps the actor that most needs greater visibility is the producer.

Behind exceptional green coffee are people continuously refining varieties, agricultural practices, fermentation, processing and drying. Yet while consumers increasingly recognise coffee shops and roasters, very few can name the person responsible for producing the coffee itself.

That is why we are developing The World’s Best Coffee Producers, an initiative created to identify and give international visibility to outstanding producers and to help professionals and Coffee Lovers put faces, names and stories behind origin.

CoffeeFest Madrid in March 2027 will bring these worlds together. The first list of The World’s Best Coffee Producers will be presented alongside the third edition of The World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops, within a community in which coffee shops and roasters are already deeply interconnected.

More than two rankings, the two lists will represent the growing unity of the coffee excellence ecosystem: from producer to roaster, from roaster to coffee shop, and from coffee shop to Coffee Lover.

Madrid will therefore be a moment to recognise excellence at both ends of the journey – and, above all, everything and everyone that connects them.

Now the industry needs to push together

Some companies and organisations have already understood this direction and are contributing from their own areas of expertise.

DaVinci Gourmet brings its specialisation in the development of high-quality signature drinks; Slayer, equipment, performance and design; Markibar, grinding technology and consistency; the Federación Nacional de Cafeteros de Colombia, its connection with one of the world’s most important coffee-producing communities; and BWT, its expertise in an element that is fundamental to every cup: water.

Sustainability must also be part of this evolution. Initiatives such as Hecho en Café, focused on giving a second life to coffee waste generated throughout the journey from farm to cup, demonstrate how responsibility, circularity and innovation can become part of the broader concept of coffee excellence.

These organisations represent very different areas of the industry, and that is precisely the point.

We have spent decades improving coffee at every stage: farming, processing, roasting, equipment, water, extraction, service and hospitality. Now it is time to ensure that the market understands the value we have collectively created.

The community is already there. Coffee shops want to improve, consumers want to learn, producers need greater visibility, professionals want to connect and companies increasingly understand that growing coffee culture ultimately means growing the market for everyone.

The next step therefore cannot belong to one company, one ranking or one part of the value chain. It requires producers, roasters, coffee shops, baristas, companies, associations, institutions and Coffee Lovers to take their position, understand their responsibility and move in the same direction.

What started by identifying the world’s best coffee shops has created something much bigger.

The community has been built. Now it is time for the entire coffee ecosystem to push together.

The next era of coffee excellence is already here. And it belongs to everyone willing to move it forward.
